To add a spoiler tag to a text message, type “/spoiler” at the start of a message. Sending “/spoiler this is a spoiler message” in a Discord server will hide the message until the recipients decide to view it. Also, you can type two vertical bars || at the start and end of your message.
If there’s one constant risk on the internet those are spoilers. All it takes is one stray comment without spoiler tags for someone to ruin the next episode of your favorite show. But how can we avoid this kind of situation in a service like Discord? That’s what we are here to find out.
While we can’t control what other people type, we do have control over our actions. And as such all of us need to learn how to use Discord spoiler tags reliably. It’s simple web etiquette, and the more people use it the more common it’ll be all over the website. Meaning that all of us will be less likely to get spoiled.
When we use a spoiler tag Discord will obscure the text or content until you click on it. This means that it’s your call whether you’ll read Discord spoiler text or not. Of course, it’s up to each one of us to avoid clicking on spoilers, but having that layer of safety is great.
Using spoilers on Discord Desktop
The answer to how to spoiler on Discord varies based on the version of Discord you are using, and what kind of content you want to mark as a spoiler. But overall spoiler tags are very simple to use, and once you learn the basics it’ll become second nature.
If your spoiler only includes text marking it as a spoiler will only take a few seconds. Write your comment normally but wait before pressing enter. Now highlight the text and on the menu that pops up click on the Eye icon. And that’s all, once you submit your text it’ll be sent as a spoiler.
You can highlight part of a larger message too, no rule says the entire message has to be a spoiler. Also, you’ll likely notice that your selected spoiler now has two bars at the start and end. This is the spoiler syntax on discord, and you can manually type the bars for the same effect.
Marking images as a spoiler is also an option, and it’s even faster. Just drag and drop the image in question and pay close attention to the options. Below the text box, you’ll be able to check the option “Mark as spoiler”. Check it and the picture will be in a spoiler tag.
Last but not least you can use the spoiler syntax to hide links. All you need to do is to add the two bars at the start and end of your link. Spoiler tags on Discord are that easy to use.
If you are on mobile you won’t see most of the above options. But spoiler tags can still be used on phones, they are just slightly more limited.
The first thing you need to know is that images and videos can’t be tagged as spoilers on mobile. You will see spoiler tags for them, but you can’t submit new ones. But for text and links, all you need to use is the || syntax and they’ll work perfectly. Mobile has some extra limitations, but the basic spoiler system works just as well.
